Making Climate Pay, 3rd Edition: Africa

Bringing sustainable climate editorial products to life with commercial business cases, this report advances the development of innovative, financially viable products.

The financial stability of African newsrooms is severely compromised by insufficient, inconsistent and short-term funding.

Such profound and pervasive challenges have led some pundits to describe the situation as ‘a media extinction event’ or ‘a Darwinian moment’, reflecting the existential threats facing the journalism industry in the region.

In this context, the situation for climate journalism is even more challenging—where a lack of support and investment stops the critical real life, real-time effects of climate change being reported in a region acutely exposed to its impacts.

Using the output of the Africa cXc knowledgeXchange in February 2024, this report offers four prototype ideas for sustainable climate journalism editorial products. These product prototypes are crafted to address these multifaceted needs, enhancing financial viability, community engagement and climate issue awareness, ultimately building a strong social mandate for climate action.
